Deputy Speaker seeks opening of mosque

Staff Reporter

"Shocking to see people offering namaz on roads, parks"

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal has announced that he along with several others would offer "namaz" at Masjid Shah Bare near Shanti Van here on Thursday to press his demand that the Masjid under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) be opened for prayers.

Mr. Iqbal said it was shocking that on Fridays and other days people were compelled to offer prayers on roads and in parks as the ASI prevented them from offering prayers in mosques.

Around noon on Wednesday, Mr. Iqbal went to Masjid Shah Bare, got the locks opened and offered prayers.

He said it was sad that the masjid, where people used to offer prayers till about two months ago, was now occupied by the Provincial Armed Constabulary and the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary.
