One arrested for robbery, snatching

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man allegedly involved in cases of robbery and snatching has been arrested in Sarita Vihar here by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police. The police claim to have recovered a country-made firearm from him.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla, after the arrest of one Raju Sansi in connection with snatching cases in June, another gang member, Raju Ganja, was arrested in Mumbai. Investigations revealed that Raju Ganja's elder brother Murari had taken over as the gang leaderand was committing snatchings along with his accomplices, some of whom were identified as Prakash, Mahender, Kailash and Rajender. A Special Staff team led by Inspector Rajender Singh was asked to track down the culprits. On Tuesday, the police received a tip-off that Murari would come to Jaitpur in Sarita Vihar on a scooter. Subsequently, a trap was laid and the accused he was arrested.

`Criminal' held

NEW DELHI: An alleged inter-State gangster has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. A country-made firearm and three live cartridges were allegedly recovered from his possession.

The accused, Harender Singh, was moving in a Santro car when a team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rishi Pal intercepted it and overpowered him on Tuesday. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in a robbery at Khurja in Uttar Pradesh in which Rs. 30 lakhs were stolen from the van ferrying money to a bank.

DDA staffer nabbed

NEW DELHI: A section officer with the Delhi Development Authority has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the State Government on charges of demanding and receiving a bribe of Rs. 300 from a labourer to allow him to stay in an East Delhi DDA park.

The Anti-Corruption Branch received a complaint from Dilip Kumar alleging that Dhirender Verma, a section officer with the DDA, was demanding money to allow him to stay in a pump house inside a DDA park at Mayur Vihar.

Subsequently a trap was laid and the accused was allegedly caught red-handed while receiving the bribe amount.

RI for rape bid

New Delhi: A man who attempted to rape his daughter has been sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment by a Delhi court. Additional Sessions Judge S.K. Kaushik observed that the prosecution could not establish beyond reasonable doubt the offence of rape although that of attempt to rape had been proved successfully. Convicting Ramesh Kumar of offences under Sections 376 (rape) and 511 (attempt to commit offence) of the IPC the court also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on him.

Ramesh allegedly made two attempts to rape his daughter on July 3, 2004 and August 31, 2004.

Building caves in

NEW DELHI: An under-construction building caved in at Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi on Wednesday. No one was reportedly injured in the incident.

According to the police, the three-storey building collapsed around 12-30 p.m. At least four fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The rescue team did not find anyone trapped under the debris.
