Prime Minister Manmohan Singh releasing Nariman's book in New Delhi on Thursday.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh suggested on Thursday that the role of judiciary ought to be debated by the legal and judicial fraternity.

The Prime Minister made the observation after releasing eminent lawyer Fali Nariman's book, India's Legal System: Can It Be Saved? at a function at his residence at Race Course Road.

Dr. Singh said Mr. Nariman had suggested reforms in the judiciary and cited the eminent lawyer as saying "that judicial interference in administrative actions is often too frequent or that the current state of the law of contempt is an impediment to judicial reform."

The function saw the congregation of some of the best legal personalities — former Chief Justices, Justice Ahmadi, Justice Khare, Justice Pathak and eminent lawyers Attorney-General Milon Banerjee, Soli Sorabjee, Shanti Bhushan, Anil Dewan, among others — as well as many senior editors and publishers.
