It is to strengthen the cause of Kannada by generating awareness among the people

  • The jatha will assess the status of Kannada in border districts
  • It will chalk out action plans for the growth of the language

Madikeri: The "Kannada nudi Kannada gadi" programme of the Government to strengthen the cause of Kannada by generating awareness among the people in the border districts of the State will enter Kodagu on October 20, according to president of the Kodagu Kannada Sahitya Parishat T.P. Ramesh here on Wednesday.

Mr. Ramesh told presspersons that the programme would start from Belgaum on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and culminate in Karwar on October 23.

The jatha would be received by the Kannada Sahitya Prishat functionaries at Virajpet in Kodagu. It would reach Madikeri later.

The jatha would assess the situation of Kannada in the border districts to chalk out plans of action for the growth of the language, Mr. Ramesh said.

Besides, the "Suvarna Karnataka Dibbana", to be taken out to commemorate "Suvarna Karnataka Year", would further strengthen the cause of Kannada in Kodagu. The Deputy Commissioner had concluded the first round of meeting and the next meeting was slated for September 1, Mr. Ramesh said.

The "Dibbana" would cover the 98 gram panchayats in the district. The programme was being sponsored by the Department of Kannada and Culture.

Mr. Ramesh said that all newspapers being published from Kodagu would be part of the newspaper exhibition at the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan to be held in Shimoga. They had been sent to the organisers of the sammelan. The Bhadravati unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat would bring out a banner depicting the culture and glory of the State.

The Kannada Sahitya Parishat would organise taluk-level conventions soon in Virajpet and Somwarpet, Mr. Ramesh said. It proposed to mobilise endowments to add to the list of nine such existing endowments in the district.

The heads of religious maths in the district would be approached in this regard, among others, he added.

Stating that the status of Kannada was good in the district, Mr. Ramesh said this year's "Kodagina Gowramma" award for literature would go to Bytadka Janaki Belliappa for her literary work, "Hasemane". The DaRa Bendre National Trust, Dharwad, had asked the Kodagu unit of the parishat to organise various programmes on September 4, Mr. Ramesh said.

Accordingly, a district-level competition of songs composed by late Bendre would be open for students in SSLC and PUC. Group dances set to Bendre's songs would be held for students of classes VIII and IX and drawing competition on Bendre would be organised for students of classes IV, V and VI.

Those from the public aged above 18 could compete in the light music involving Bendre's compositions, he said. A special programme on Bendre would be organised at the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College here on September 9.

The new honorary secretary of the Kodagu Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bharati Ramesh, treasurer, Achamaiah, and executive committee member, Muneer Ahmad, were present.
