FOR A CAUSE: SFI activists taking out a `jatha' in Eluru on Thursday.
ELURU: The cycle `jatha', launched by the district committee of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) from Tadepalligudem on August 17 highlighting the problems of social welfare hostel students, reached the city on Thursday after covering different areas en route for two weeks. The `jatha' visited 253 hostels in 45 mandals conversing a distance of 890 km. The SFI will hold a public meeting near the Collector's office on Friday to mark the end of the `jatha.' The team of student leaders, who took part in it, visited several social welfare hostels and elicited information on their problems from inmates.
Hike sought
According to SFI district president B.V. Varma, the students complained to SFI leaders on the need to increase cosmetic charges and mess charges sanctioned by the Government for them. It was found that the Government had neglected the SC, BC and ST welfare hostels. As a result, they lacked minimum facilities like drinking water and toilets. Scores of students in ST hostels in the agency got afflicted with viral fevers. There were no medical facilities within their reach, Mr. Varma said.
