"Tourist Police" to be formed

The personnel will act as guides for tourists visiting Pondicherry

Pondicherry: Local Administration and Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao announced in the Assembly on Thursday that the Government would soon appoint "Tourist Police."

The Minister said these personnel would act as guides for tourists visiting the Union Territory. The security of tourists on the beach road would also be ensured. Highlighting various schemes evolved to promote tourism in Pondicherry, Mr. Rao said the annual growth of tourists coming to Pondicherry stood at 15 per cent now and the Government intended to double this in another two years.

The Pondicherry Administration would acquire 80 hectares of land from the Tamil Nadu Government to expand the airport here. Various tourism projects would be developed in Manapet, Ariyakuppam, Manavely, Karuvadikuppam, besides the airport at Karuvadikuppam. As much as 138 hectares of land would be acquired for these projects, he said. The Tirunallar Temple town project in Karaikal would involve utilisation of 80 hectares of land which had since been acquired and the total cost of the project was Rs. 220 crore.

Eco tourism would be promoted in Karaikal and Yanam regions.
