Pondicherry: Industries and Electricity Minister V. Vaithilingam told the Assembly on Thursday that the Government planned to set up a power plant at Yanam to generate 100-megawatt power, using the natural gas available in the Godavari belt. Mr. Vaithilingam said the Pondicherry Government-owned Power Corporation at Karaikal was producing 33-megawatt power making use of the natural gas available from nearby ONGC source. The power produced was meeting part of the requirement in Karaikal. He said it would not be possible to set up a power plant in Pondicherry. The Government planned to set up a gas-based power generation plant at Yanam. Replying to the main question raised earlier by A. Anbalagan (AIADMK), the Minister said the Power Corporation in Karaikal had earned a net profit of Rs. 6.40 crore during 2000-2001 and this was followed by a profit of Rs. 7.32 crore in 2001-2002, Rs. 8.34 crore in 2002-2003, Rs. 14.34 crore in 2003-2004 and Rs. 10.74 crore in 2004-2005.
