Unemployed B.Ed graduates seek posting on seniority basis

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: Candidates holding Teachers Education (Bachelor of Education) certificates and degrees after completing courses several years ago have been waiting for jobs. The candidates had registered their names in the Pondicherry Employment Exchange.

Irked by the present policy of the Government to post candidates on merit basis, the graduates took out a rally here on Wednesday and sought posting on the basis of seniority in registration. They also sought an allowance of Rs. 2,500 a month during their period of unemployment.

A spokesman of the Agitation Committee of the Unemployed Graduates said in a release that the Government was on its part running 65 high schools and 40 higher secondary schools with more than 75,000 students on rolls. In addition to the government schools, the private managements were also running high and higher secondary schools with a large number of students under their control. In spite of these schools and large strength of students, there were no sufficient teachers to handle classes. The spokesman said one could come across students resorting to agitations frequently seeking posting of sufficient teachers as they were racing against time to sit for public examinations.

The private managements were also causing hardship to parents by collecting hefty sums of donations. However the schools were providing very poor amenities to students. Teachers working in private schools were getting very poor pay.

The spokesman said 80 per cent of the total vacancies in government schools should be filled through direct recruitment offering opportunities to graduates who had registered themselves with the employment exchange.

The Government should adopt the ratio of 1:25 (one teacher for every 25 students) in government and private institutions.
