AIADMK MLA's appeal to Government

Special Correspondent

Pondicherry: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislator A. Anbalagan has called upon the Government to initiate stern measures against those levying higher rate of interest and causing hardships to the poor and the middle-income groups in Pondicherry.

Drawing the attention of the "nuisance" caused by such private moneylenders during zero hour in the Assembly on Thursday, Mr. Anbalagan said the torture inflicted by them on the poor was such that there were instances of some of the borrowers committing suicide. The interest levied by such persons touched as high a rate as 15 to 20 per cent. He also specifically pointed out areas where these moneylenders were operating. They were also using muscle power to extract the exorbitant rate of interest from the poor borrowers and also monthly wage earners. He said the situation became worse when the affected persons sought police help. Complaints were hardly accepted from poor families at the police station.
