KANCHEEPURAM: Consecration of the Ekambaranathar temple was performed here with religious fervour and gaiety between 9-30 a.m. and 10-30 a.m. on Thursday. Thousands of devotees from Kancheepuram and surrounding areas gathered on the temple precincts to witness the "mahakumbhabishekam." Pots containing holy water were taken in a procession from "yaga salai" to the sanctum sanctorum, main tower and other "vimanams" at around 9 a.m. after the "yaga pujas" and "homams" which commenced on August 27. The holy water was poured on the "kalasams" at the 192-feet high main tower (Rajagopuram) and other "vimanams" at around 9-40 a.m. Subsequently, the "swayambu" idol of Ekambaranathar at the main sanctum sanctorum, granite idols at other shrines and the panchaloka idols were consecrated at around 10-20 a.m. The Chengalpattu MP, A.K.
