Pondicherry: Legislative Assembly members on Thursday urged the Government to take steps to contain growing mosquito menace in the Union Territory. N. Anandhu (PMC) demanded that fogging operations be taken up. A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) said the mosquito nuisance had assumed serious proportions and added that the Uppanar canal was a constant breeding ground for the mosquitoes. He wanted regular desilting of the canal. The DMK members A.M.H. Nazeem and R. Siva called for sustained efforts to eliminate the larvae at their breeding sites. Health Minister E. Valsaraj said there should be joint efforts by the Health, PWD and Local Administration Departments to combat the nuisance. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said tenders had been finalised and contractors would soon be engaged to desilt the Uppanar canal.
