Sangha says farmers were allowed to agitate and then arrested

  • Railway Police prevented farmers from entering the Railway Station, says sangha
  • The 12 farmers who were permitted to stage the agitation were later arrested

GULBARGA: The Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha (Puttanaiah) and the Red Gram Growers' Association on Thursday charged the Government Railway Police officials of allowing their representatives to stage a rail roko agitation on Wednesday in Gulbarga Railway Station and later filing cases against them and arresting them.

Addressing a joint press conference here, working president of the association Basavaraj Ingin, State general secretary of the KRRS Basvaraj Rachareddy, division convener Basavareddy Karaddy and district president Umapathy Patil said the Railway police had deceived farmers' representatives and had acted in a vengeful manner.

Farmers staged a rail roko agitation demanding that the Centre ensure remunerative prices for agriculture produce and introduce a pro-farmer export and import policies and pay adequate compensation to farmers who had lost their crops in the floods and drought situation.

Mr. Ingin said Railway Police personnel prevented the farmers from entering the Railway Station forcing them to stage a dharna at the main entrance gate of the station against the denial of entry into the station.

He said that the farmers told the Railway police personnel that they had intimated the authorities concerned about the rail roko in advance .

Mr. Ingin said the Railway police officials said they would permit only 10 or 12 of them to stage the rail roko and enter the railway platform. However, the Railway police later said all 12 farmers leaders had been arrested for holding the agitation and booked cases against them and produced them before the court.

Mr. Ingin said the Railway police personnel had no right to treat farmers badly .
