A veritable windfall awaits candidates who had chosen the Bharathidasan Institute of Technology (BIT) of the Bharathidasan University in the Single Window Counselling for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions this year. It is only a matter of time before the State Government designates the BIT as Anna University, Tiruchi. The staff members too have reason to feel buoyed over the impending development. So are the principals of engineering colleges in the central and southern districts, who hope to be a part of the policy-making apparatus and enhance research outputs by virtue of geographical proximity. The government, it is learnt, has already set in motion the process of choosing a Vice-Chancellor for the new university. As far as the Bharathidasan University is concerned, it stands to lose infrastructure worth several crores of rupees it had assiduously created over the years for BIT along with about 400 acres of land. The importance the university attached to its Technical Wing could be gauged from its christening of the institution last year as Bharathidasan Institute of Technology, on the lines of the prestigious Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM). It was earlier called School of Engineering and Technology. But then, one's loss is another's gain.
