Autorickshaws have of late become one of the means for mass education and awareness campaigns. Be it an election or a festival, autorickshaws are converted into mobile propaganda units with the display of banners and other publicity materials. Realising its importance, an auto driver of Tiruchi, S. Siva, has prominently pasted a sticker on the windshield of his vehicle. The sticker not only politely decries those drinking multinational softdrinks as `anti-nationals,' but also advises people to prefer tender coconut, which is `best suited to Indian climate.' As a large number of tourists and pilgrims depend on autorickshaws in this city, "I wanted to motivate people to boycott foreign goods," says Mr. Siva, a member of the Pudhiya Jananayaka Thozhilalar Munnani, affiliated to the Makkal Kalai Ilakkiya Kazhagam.
