Thiruvananthapuram: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs.2.61 crore to develop a model livestock village at Mattupetty in Idukki district. The Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB) will implement the project. The Mattupetty farm of the KLDB, which houses a bull station for the production of crossbred and purebred cattle and buffalo bulls, attracted 1.5 lakh visitors last year. The KLDB proposes to create a livestock knowledge centre and provide recreational facilities for the visitors. A total area of 26 acres has been earmarked for the project, which envisages construction of a main block to house the livestock knowledge centre and a livestock farm to house the various categories of livestock. The other components are vegetable farm, orchard farm, agri supermarket, amphitheatre and restaurant complex. The centre will also exhibit state-of-the-art technology equipment used for livestock development. The project is expected to give a boost to the extension services. Further, the availability of knowledge will give a fillip to new ventures in Kerala, thereby reducing the dependency on imports from neighbouring States. The project during implementation will create 75,000 man days of non-recurring employment.
