Regal journey on wheels to begin anew

The famed luxury on rails, Palace on Wheels, will now begin its Delhi-end of the journey from Safdarjung railway station in the Capital instead of the Delhi Cantonment railway station from where the journey to various tourist destinations in Rajasthan used to begin so far.

According to Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) Managing Director Rakesh Saini, the Palace on Wheels, a joint venture of the Indian Railways and the RTDC, set out on the trial run with 17 passengers on board from Safdarjung railway station on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Mr. Saini said the change was done keeping in mind the convenience of the tourists. In Jaipur, too, the train will arrive at and depart from Gandhi Nagar railway station.

Mr. Saini said this was the first time the trial run had begun in the month of August. Earlier, the trial run used to begin on the first Wednesday of September every year. The exclusive commercial trip of the Palace on Wheels carrying 70 tourists would begin on September 6. The tourist season for the Palace on Wheels would end in April 2007.

The official also clarified that the floods, which have affected several parts of Rajasthan in the past few days, will have no effect on the journey of the Palace on Wheels as there has been no damage to the tracks to Jodhpur. "Therefore, the tourists should not have any doubt in this regard," said Mr. Saini. Also, the transportation services are running normal at all important tourist destinations in Rajasthan, he added.

During the journey, tourists will visit Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur and Agra.

Mr. Saini said the train has been given a new look focusing on ethnic decoration.
