Gulbarga MP to head Joint Committee

GULBARGA: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has appointed Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi, Gulbarga MP, chairman of the 15-member Joint Committee constituted to examine various aspects of the controversial office of profit Bill passed by both Houses of Parliament.

Other members of the committee are Ram Jethmalani Arun Jaitley, Abhishek Singhvi, Sitaram Yechury and Virendra Bhatia from the Rajya Sabha and Raghunath Jha, Satyanarayan Jatiya, A. Krishnaswamy, Madhusudan Mistry, Kishore Chandra S. Deo, Santosh Gangwar, Mohammed Salim, Rajesh Verma and Ram Gopal Yadav from the Lok Sabha, according to official sources here. — Special Correspondent

Meet on aviation and space medicine

Bangalore: The 54th International Congress of Aviation and Space Medicine will be held here from September 10 for five days on the theme `Aerospace medicine: the road ahead.' It is being organised by the Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine.

More than 375 delegates, including 125 from abroad, will participate in the conference, according to a press release. The discussions at the conference will cover all aspects related to aviation, from aerospace medicine to aeronautics.

Last year's congress was held in Warsaw, Poland, and the next congress is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria.

Admission tickets sent to candidates

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has despatched admission tickets to candidates appearing for its Gazetted Probationers (Preliminary) Examination to be held on September10.

Appeal to Indo-China war veterans

BANGALORE: The Department of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement has been collecting information on Defence personnel who took part in the 1962 war against China and were released from service without benefits, such as pension, because of the norms applicable then.

The department has requested such personnel to contact its district offices.

Bodies recovered from river

BIJAPUR: Two more bodies of those who died in the maxi-cab accident were found in the Krishna 6 km downstream from Alamatti Brdige on National Highway 13 on Thursday.

They were identified as Puja Shivkumar Karadkal (10) of Agalkera and Sujatha Kashinath Shettar (7) of Bahadurbandi (both from Koppal district). The bodies were found in the bushes on the left bank of the river near Yallammanbudihal village. The Bagalkot Rural Police are searching for the remaining five bodies. With this, 24 of the 29 bodies have been retrieved. — Staff Correspondent

Robbery attempt in former MLA's house

HASSAN: A four-member team of robbers tried to rob the house of former MLA of Arsikere K.P. Prabhukumar on Wednesday night. However, owing to timely action by Sharat, Mr. Prabhukumar's son, the robbers failed in their endeavour and fled the scene, according to police.

The robbers, according to police, entered the house of Sachidananda, brother of Mr. Prabhukumar by breaking open the window, but they could not get anything, as the family was residing in Bangalore. Later they entered the house of Mr. Prabhukumar. But Sharat, who was awake, called his friend on his mobile and informed him about the armed robbers. Arsikere town police have registered a case in this regard. — Staff Correspondent

Kidnapped child traced

RAICHUR: The Raichur Police arrested Laxmi Narasappa, Laxmi Bheemanna and Eshwari on the charge of kidnapping a five-year-old child from L.B.S. Nagar in the city on Wednesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. Police said the accused had kidnapped the child from a house while it was asleep. They kept the child in the house of Eshwari at Jawaharnagar.

Based on a complaint lodged by the mother, the police were able to trace the child. The Marketyard police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Funds for libraries

HASSAN: In view of the improving literacy rate, the Department of Library is making efforts to encourage reading. Apart from District Central Library, there are nine branch libraries in Arsikere, Arkalgud, Alur, Belur, Channarayapatna, Gorur, Holenarsipur, Konanur and Sakleshpur in the district and 1.72 lakh books have been provided to meet the requirements of

9,041 members, according to a release here on Thursday. District librarian Rame Gowda said a Rs. 60-lakh proposal had been sent to the Government for the construction of a library building in Hassan city .— Staff Correspondent

Time extended

DHARWAD: Karnatak University, Dharwad, has extended the last date for submitting applications with fine for the supplementary examinations of BA, B.Com Part 1, 2 and 3 (External) till September 15. Man, children drown in tank

CHIKMAGALUR: Suresh (48), a supervisor in a coffee plantation, and his children, Shambavi (8) and Sharath (4), drowned when the motorcycle on which they were travelling fell into a tank near Mugthihalli on the outskirts of Chikmagalur on Wednesday. Suresh is said to have been returning to his house when the incident occurred. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined. The police have registered a case.

`Struggle inevitable'

BHADRAVATI: A struggle to protect Christians has become inevitable, said David Simeon, president of the Karnataka Federation of Christian Organisations. He was speaking at a meeting of Christian organisations in New Town here. He said some anti-religious elements were wrongly propagating against Christians. Rebate on khadi sought

BELLARY: Khadi Gramodyog Sanghas in Bellary district have urged the State Government to announce 20 per cent rebate on retail sale of khadi throughout the year instead of the usual 15 per cent in the wake of the State celebrating "Suvarna Karnataka" this year. In a memorandum, representatives of the various sanghas drew the attention of the Government to the fact that Tamil Nadu had announced 20 per cent rebate. According to them, the Union Government had been announcing 20 per cent rebate, 10 per cent throughout the year and a special rebate of additional 10 per cent for a period of 108 days. — Staff Correspondent
