Teleservice centre at post office

Staff Reporter

BSNL has outsourced address verification to the postal department

BANGALORE: The Department of Posts inaugurated its new teleservice centre at Bangalore General Post Office here on Thursday. The centre, touted to be the first of its kind in India, will act as the nodal office for various new services offered and pioneered by the Karnataka Circle.

S. Ramaganapathy, Chief General Manager (Telecom), Bharath Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), inaugurated the services for address verification and e-payments offered by the centre.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India regulations stipulated that all telephone service providers should verify customer addresses for authorising a connection, he said. "In BSNL, we have outsourced the address verification service to the Department of Posts, considering its experience in leveraging its resources," he said.

The address verification service is being offered by the postal department to telecom companies, banks, and credit card companies, among other organisations which require address verification.

K.S.R. Sastry, Assistant Postmaster General, Karnataka Postal Circle, said: "The department is also offering an online management information system (MIS) service, which enables a customer to view all the updated billing information, as a value added service."

Works of BSNL and Hutchison Essar for the entire Karnataka region had already been undertaken, he said. The teleservices centre would also offer an e-payment service at post office counters.

Mr. Sastry said that the service would be extended to customers of any service provider to remit their bill dues. The teleservice centre would expand its services in the near future to create, process and deliver the bills and related documents of the service providers, he said. N. Chandrasekhara, General Manager (Mobile Services), BSNL, and Sanjay Sawney, General Manager (Customer Service), Hutchison Essar South, were present.
