KOLLAM: People living near the clay mines at Velichikala, near here, staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate on Thursday, demanding a ban on mining. They alleged that mining was creating serious environmental problems in the area. Inaugurating the dharna, C.R. Neelakandan, environmental activist, said the protest by the Velichikala Action Council was for fresh air and protection of water sources. He said a people's convention would shortly be called at Thiruvananthapuram to chart out future programmes of agitation against clay mining. Environmentalists and cultural and social activists would attend the convention. Odnavattom Vijayaprakash, patron of the action council, presided over the inauguration. The council members warned of intensifying the agitation.
