DTPC Onam celebrations begin today

Formal inauguration on Monday by lighting the lamp

KANNUR: Arrangements are under way for the Onam celebrations in the district being organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC).

A `pookalam' competition being organised in association with the District Agri-Horticultural Society would mark the beginning of the festivities on Friday. Various institutions and firms would participate, said District Collector and DTPC chairperson Ishitha Roy at a press conference here on Thursday.

`Onasadya' would be held in all five Government-controlled Poor Homes. A painting competition for children will be held at Government Vocational Higher Secondary School on Sunday. The function would be inaugurated by A.P. Abdullakutty, MP.

The celebrations would be formally inaugurated on `Uthradam' day on Monday. MLAs K.C. Joseph, P. Jayarajan, K.P. Mohanan, M. Prakashan and C.K.P. Padmanabhan would light the lamp to open the programme, to be held at the Beach Park at Payyambalam.

Cultural functions would be held at the Beach Park on `Thiruvonam' day on Tuesday. Music programmes and Kalaripayattu performances would be held. Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy would be the chief guest. A rural games programme and Adivasi cultural programme would be held on Muzhappilangad beach the same day.

The celebrations would conclude with a ceremony on Wednesday. Cultural programmes, including ganamela, Oppana and Mappilapattu, would be organised.

Organising committee chairman M. Surendran and DTPC secretary E.C. Raveendran were present at the press meet.
