Rape case: two get jail term

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Kottayam District and Sessions Judge N. Natarajan on Thursday sentenced two of the accused in a rape case to 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

The first and second accused in the case Benoy (27) of Kurichiyil, Kannukettussery, and Jordyraj (27) of Kaiparambil House, Vaikom, would have to pay a compensation Rs.17,000 each.

The third accused in the case was set free.

The court also found that the earlier investigation into the case by the then Dy.SP (Pala) Haridas was flawed. The case pertained to the rape of a 24-year-old married Dalit woman while she was sleeping with her five-year-old child on May 8, 2003.

In the earlier investigation, the police refused to include Benoy as one of the accused. Instead, another person Anoop was included.
