KURNOOL: J. Srihari, Principal of APSRTC Staff Training College, has said that the accident rate in the country is 6 per cent of the total rate in the world though the vehicle population in India accounts for 1 per cent of world vehicle population. Addressing an integrated training programme for all categories of employees of the corporation from three Rayalaseema districts here on Thursday, he said around 10 lakh people were killed in road accidents in the world every year while another 3.5 crores maimed. At this rate, 2,800 people were killed everyday, 120 every hour and two per minute. Road accidents emerged the largest killer of human beings. In India, one lakh people were killed in road accidents every year, 260 per day and 12 per hour. In Andhra Pradesh, 38,000 road accidents occurred every year at the rate of 105 per day. Mr. Srihari explained that mental fatigue of drivers, negligence, poor condition of roads and vehicles, excess speed and lack of observance of road rules were some of the reasons for road accidents.
Safety issues
He said the track record of the RTC was unbeatable on the safety front and asked drivers to improve the driving conditions. Panduranga Reddy, Solomon, Suryanarayana, Nagasubba Reddy and others spoke.
