Collector orders repair of 150 houses in three camps in the district

With the increase in influx of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees due to escalation of hostilities between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the Army, the district administration has initiated steps to renovate the houses at refugee camps here.This follows a direction from the Commissioner of Rehabilitation to create adequate infrastructure for accommodating more refugees in the three camps at Thekattur near Arimalam, Thoppukollai near Tiruvarankulam and Azhiyanilai near Aranthangi.
A total of 2,715 refugees, belonging to 792 families, have been accommodated in these camps. They include 1,389 women.
The Collector, S.J. Chiru, has ordered the repair of 150 houses, 50 in each camp. With the houses having remained in disuse for a long time, the asbestos ceiling had been badly ripped off and in several cases walls had also collapsed. Electrical wirings had also been damaged.The repair works, which would commence within a week, would include construction of additional toilets and supply of drinking water.
The Collector has also directed the security agencies to keep a vigil over any possible movement of militants.
