Chikungunya: over 76,000 suspected cases reported

  • Coordinated action being taken to check the spread of the disease to various parts in the State
  • The disease is not life-threatening and taking a Paracetamol is enough, say experts

    HYDERABAD: As many as 76,462 suspected chikungunya cases from 22 districts in the State had been reported, according to a note tabled by Health Minister K. Rosaiah in the Assembly on Thursday. The number of confirmed cases was only 248.

    The maximum number of 18,314 cases was reported from Visakhapatnam district followed, among others, by Warangal (9,995), Kurnool (7, 956) Anantapur (7,346), Chittoor (5,376), Prakasam (4,414) and Mahabubnagar (2,663). The least number of 453 cases was reported from Srikakulam district. He said that 615 mandals and 3,790 villages were affected by the viral fever.

    Mr. Rosaiah said that coordinated action to control mosquito breeding, providing immediate symptomatic treatment and prevention of its spread through extensive use of homoeo medicines were the main components of the programme taken up by the Government.

    Listing out the preventive and curative measures taken against various vector-borne diseases in all the 23 districts, he said the Government was periodically sensitising doctors and paramedical staff through training programmes conducted by experts.

    Funds provided

    Experts had stated that it was not a life-threatening disease and a simple treatment like taking a Paracetamol was enough.

    District Medical and Health Officers were provided with Rs. 3 lakhs each for purchase of emergency drugs and miscellaneous expenditure, the Minister said.
