KARIMNAGAR: The district administration has chalked out strategies to take up bio-diesel plantation as avenue plantation under the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (REGS) in Karimnagar district. Disclosing this to newsmen here on Thursday, district Collector M. V. Satyanarayana said that they had decided to achieve the target of planting one-lakh bio-diesel saplings during the current year under the scheme and also provide employment to the rural poor. Accordingly, the authorities have chalked out strategies to take up plantation of bio-diesel (kanuga) saplings along 979-km road network in rural areas. With the help of SHG members, the plantation is through on 106-km stretch in the district. The plantation was taken up right from 20-feet wide roads. The district Collector said that they involved the SHG members under the scheme to provide wages. They are also entrusted with the task of protecting the saplings. He said that they had issued job cards to 2,58,868 persons in the district and sanctioned 16,783 works at a cost of Rs. 214.88 crores. Mr. Satyanarayana said that they had already completed works worth Rs. 83.36 crores in the district under the employment guarantee scheme. Project Director of District Water Management Agency A. Srinivas was also present.
