Fogging efforts not enough, say members

  • 170 awareness camps in public places were conducted
  • Mass work is on to clear the weeds

Chennai : Councillors of the Chennai Corporation demanded more steps for mosquito control and prevention of chikungunya in the city.

During question hour at the Council meeting held on Thursday, ward six councillor P.S.S. Dhanushkodi asked what steps were taken to prevent chikungunya.

Deputy Mayor R. Thiagarajan replied that 1,187 handheld devices and 680 vehicles were employed for fogging. Door-to-door visits to provide information on mosquito control and 170 awareness camps in public places were conducted.

Councillors of several wards said that fogging efforts for mosquito control were often delayed. Councillor M. Nedumaran reported that workers complained that they did not have enough diesel to run the fogging vehicles.

DMK floor leader C. V. Malayan said that a joint committee of various civic bodies had been convened in the previous government's regime to control mosquito breeding by keeping city waterways clean. However, there was a lack of action, he claimed.

    S. Munusamy, ward 76 councillor, asked if immediate steps could be taken to clean up the waterways, especially the Otteri Canal, in zone five (Anna Nagar). Mr. Thiagarajan said that mass work was on to clear the weeds and complete fogging in the canals that cross Puliyur, Azad Nagar and Mehta Nagar in wards 74, 76 and 77.
