ASSESSING THE DAMAGE: Fire service personnel inspect the godown in Kachiguda where a fire broke out on Thursday. Photo: PTI
HYDERABAD: Large quantity of spurious seed and outdated pesticide were completely destroyed in a fire at a railway godown in Kachiguda on Thursday morning. Firemen fought the flames for more than an hour using five fire tenders. The Agriculture Department had seized and stored the seed and pesticides. People living in the RTC quarters panicked as smoke engulfed the area. "People felt suffocated and they feared it could be a major disaster," the Kachiguda police said. Reasons behind the accident are yet to be ascertained. Another fire accident was reported in Lakdikapul when liquefied petroleum gas was being transferred from a tanker to an underground container in a gas station. "It could have been a major one if the fire service personnel had not acted immediately," Saifabad Inspector Ramnarasimha Reddy said. The LPG fuel station staff told the police that a spark from high-tension wires ignited the gas. The fuel station employees quickly sprinkled a chemical powder and the fire service men too arrived to help them in putting out the fire.
Mishap in bank
A third fire accident was reported in Vijaya Bank housed at the first floor of Babu Khan Estate, Basheerbagh. Bank employees managed to put out the flames even before the firemen arrived at the spot. "The bank staff told us that only some papers were destroyed," Ravinder, duty officer at the fire control room, said.
