Bangalore: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council passed a resolution on Thursday appealing to the State Government to conduct elections to the Council in November as scheduled. The elections were likely to be postponed because the delimitation process was likely to be delayed and the Government planned to form a Greater Bangalore. Raising the point during discussion on elections, Kuppuraj (Austin Town) said that under Article 243, elections to the BMP Council should be conducted before the expiry of the five-year term. Mr. Kuppuraj told The Hindu that only a legitimate reason could be used to supersede a BMP Council. "Whose fault is it that they have not done the delimitation when the High Court itself ordered the State Government to delimit the wards according to 2001 Census?," he asked. BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj told the Council that work on delimitation had not begun because a final notification had not been received from the State Government. Joint Commissioner (Administration) Venkata Ramana Nayak said the State Election Commission had asked for details about the wards and their population. On the merger of the eight urban local bodies (ULBs) with the BMP, the former Mayor P.R. Ramesh said that the move would create problems.
Notice to a mall
The controversial issue of Garuda Mall came up for discussion at the Council with Ganesh Mandir Corporator A.H. Basavaraju asking for update on action taken regarding deviations in the construction. In spaces earmarked for parking of 89 vehicles, the builders had built a food court, office and shops, which constituted a clear breach of management clause, said Mr. Jairaj. He said the builders were served a show-cause notice on July 28.
