Soorya Festival to begin on September 21

1,000 artistes to participate in the 75-day long fete

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 1,000 artistes from all over the country are expected to participate in the 75-day Soorya Festival beginning here on September 21.

`Athbhutham' directed by Jayaraj and `Saasanam' (Tamil) by Mahendran are the inaugural films to be screened at the festival. A magical short play `Charithram Marannuvecha Vismaya Thalukal' created by magician Gopinath Mudukad and actor Saikumar and a specially choreographed programme by Samudra on Adityahridayam and Ganesa Vandanam are the highlights of the inaugural session at the Tagore Theatre.

The film festival from September 21 to 30 would feature films in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, Assamese and Kannada languages. A video mela will be held from September 22 to 30.

A notable feature of this year's festival would be the screening of a collection of old films titled `Flashback.' The Meet the Masters category would include five films by Mrinal Sen, while the Milestone category would feature a cross section of world cinema.

Some of the prominent artistes who would participate in the Dance and Music festival include K.J.Yesudas (Carnatic), K.S. Chitra (Bhajans), Ramesh Narayanan-Sreevalsan Menon (Jugalbandi), Gayatri (Hindustani), Kadri Gopalnath (Saxophone), Padma Subramaniam, Vineet, and Sobhana (Bharatanatyam) and Meeradas Group (Odissi).

Talk festival

Sukumar Azhikode, Rajmohan Unnithan, T.P.Sreenivasan, Kummanam Rajasekharan, Thomas Isaac and K.T.Jaleel are among those who would figure in the `Talk Festival' from October 11 to 20. The Literary Meet would feature ONV Kurup, Perumbadavam Sreedharan, Sugathakumari, V.Madhusoodanan Nair and D.Vinayachandran.

Orchid Portraits, a photo exhibition by C. Suseendran and a poster exhibition by Venu Thekkemadom would be held at the Kalabhavan theatre.

The curtains would come down on the festival with an instrumental fusion programme by violin maestro Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and group on December 4.
