Man shot at

NEW DELHI: A handicapped mini-bus owner was allegedly shot at and injured by rival operators at Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh on August 8. The victim's family had on several occasions informed the authorities concerned about the threat to his life from the accused, but to no avail.

According to a petition submitted to the Uttar Pradesh Director-General of Police dated August 9, Shatrughan Singh said his brother Jai Shankar was shot at and injured by some criminal elements on August 8. "Despite my petitions to the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister's Office and the Union Home Ministry regarding the threats, no concrete action was taken against the culprits," he said.

In a petition to the Chief Justice of India and the Prime Minister's Office this April, Mr. Singh had submitted that his younger brother, Jai Shankar, was handicapped and had been running a mini-bus since September 2005, with an authorised permit. But a man with a criminal record who ran a Tata-407 on the same route allegedly threatened him with dire consequences if he did not change the route of his vehicle.

Teacher held

NEW DELHI: A teacher of Mount Abu Public School at Rohini here was arrested on Thursday on charges of outraging the modesty of a student of his school. According to the police, Brajesh Singh committed the crime this past Tuesday on the school premises. The victim complained to her parents about the incident after which they got a case registered against Brajesh Singh. He was arrested on Thursday. The wife of the accused is the Principal of the school.
