PATNA: Rescue personnel fished out 10 bodies on Friday almost 36 hours after a country boat capsized in the Ganga in which about 32 persons were said to have drowned near here on Thursday.
Identified
All the bodies were identified as residents of Raghopur in Vaishali district and handed over to their relatives after post-mortem. Authorities have provided a compensation of Rs. 5,000 to each of these bereaved families for meeting funeral expenses. The bodies were retrieved downstream along the banks of the river in Vaishali and Patna districts. The boat was on its round from the Damrahi Ghat here and Jhaphrabad in Vaishali when it sank midstream.
Paswan visits
Union Steel Minister and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan paid a visit to the ghat and consoled the bereaved families most of whom hail from his Lok Sabha constituency of Hajipur. Apart from announcing a compensation of Rs. 25,000 to each of the bereaved families, Mr. Paswan also promised to give Rs. 1 lakh to the boatman to compensate for the loss of his country boat. Mr. Paswan would be meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday to urge him to provide central assistance to relatives of the victims. He also demanded that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar increase the quantum of compensation from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh.
