Bangalore: Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa said on Friday that 500 km of the 3,000 km of national highways in the State would be converted into four lane. The Minister was speaking at the inauguration of a public information campaign on "Bharat Nirman" organised here by the Press Information Bureau.
Connectivity
Mr. Muniyappa said that steps had been initiated to provide connectivity to various ports in the State, including the one in Mangalore. Bangalore, Kolar, Mulbagal and other places in the State would be linked through state-of-the-art road. Enlisting the programmes under "Bharat Nirman", the Minister said that national highways across the country would be developed in seven phases by 2012 at a cost of Rs. 1,72,000 crore.
Time-bound plan
"Bharat Nirman" is a time-bound plan for creating rural infrastructure by 2009. It aims at providing electricity, safe drinking water, telephone connectivity, and 60 lakh houses to poor people living in rural areas under the Indira Awas Yojana.
`National Nutrition Week'
M.V. Rajasekaran, Union Minister of State for Planning, inaugurated "National Nutrition Week" and released a Kannada brochure on "Nutrition Literacy". Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rajasekaran said that to make "Bharat Nirman" successful the people should be involved in all development activities. The public information campaign on "Bharat Nirman" will comprise media workshops on rural electrification and power sector reforms, a sensitisation workshop for women members of gram, taluk and zilla panchayats, health and nutrition camp, and farmers' convention on new farm technologies and best farm practices. The public information campaign will end on September 5.
