OBC Bill

This refers to the Bill granting 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in Central educational institutions, tabled in the Lok Sabha. By including the creamy layer among the beneficiaries of the proposed reservation, the Government has cheated the more needy and deserving among the OBCs. Those who have benefited from the policy will continue to benefit.

K. Hari Krishnan,
Tuticorin, T.N.

The proposed reservation scheme is a farce. It is well known that the existing reservation for OBCs in State universities and colleges has created inequalities by benefiting only a few powerful castes. Under the latest scheme, a major chunk of the benefits will be cornered by the already rich and powerful OBCs. The Bill should make a separate provision for MBCs within the proposed reservation for OBCs.

Anoop Singh,
Lucknow

Reservation in educational institutions is aimed at the uplift of the backward classes and ensuring social equality and justice. Its outright denouncement is, therefore, unjustified. At the same time, in the larger interests of the country, it must be ensured that the doors of the institutions of higher learning are not shut on any economically backward, exceptionally bright student just because he or she belongs to a so-called forward community.

K.N. Ramani,
Coimbatore
