Letters to the Editor
The argument in the article "Rethinking reservation: from caste to region" (Open Page, Aug. 27) was different compared to the oft-repeated views on the issue. It rightly says that the current policy obsession with the designated categories of historically oppressed people should be abandoned. If a reservation policy is to be drafted with the honest intent to actually ameliorate the condition of the disadvantaged, the focus should be more on the backward people living in remote corners of the country and people with low income irrespective of caste or religion.
A.V.A. Eswaran,
* * * The article has come up with a different perspective on reservation. If the government is really interested in the uplift of the backward, it must think on the lines of extending reservation to the marginalised sections of backward regions.
R. Manikandan,
* * * The decades-old system of reservation based on caste needs to be reviewed. There are very poor sections that cannot afford nutritious food, let alone education and healthcare. The present system benefits only the urban elite amongst the stakeholders. Taking the village as a unit, economic status should be made the basis of reservation.
P. Ravikumar,
