Debatable

The article "Darrell Hair and South Asian solidarity" (Aug. 31) attempts to reinforce the paradigm that South Asians turn out to be cry babies when a decision or law does not give them comfort. But then it is not fair to cherry-pick incidents to prove a point. Whether the Pakistan team tampered with the ball is not yet known. Certainly the Darrell Hair case needs investigation.

R. Agastya,

When law-enforcing bodies go wrong in their decisions, doesn't the public have the right to protest be it in cricket or day-to-day life? Gandhi exercised that right and that is what citizens of a democracy ought to do.

I am in complete agreement with the views expressed in the article. We as a society refuse to follow rules. We continue to drive even if there is a stop signal unless there is a constable lurking somewhere in the vicinity. We think rules are meant for our neighbours. We rarely follow instructions. If we are given a set of instructions, we follow only those that suit us.

It is true that only the rule of law can ensure that a society remains disciplined. But it is only natural for one caught violating a law to complain. Darrell Hair has enforced the law strictly. There is nothing wrong in it.

Many will agree with the article's generalisation that South Asians are indifferent to the rule of law. But the application of this postulation to sports, especially cricket, does not appear to be correct. Darrell Hair may have been right in applying the law. But he should have called for an explanation from the Pakistan team before doing so. An international umpire should not give room for any criticism.
