Art as political expression

Mandira Nayar

NEW DELHI: Air-conditioned art galleries in posh colonies might not be open to them to browse, but they have finally got a chance to be the ``art". Invisible for too long, the marginalised sections of society have got an opportunity to express the inner voice of humankind through the medium of art. An unusual exhibition, "Visual Voices of the Marginalised" is a collection of clay sculptures that reflect the challenges of the marginalised. The result of a month-long workshop with artist K. P. Soman with over 40 activists from across India, the exhibition will give the viewer a rare look at "political" art. The show is an initiative of Delhi Sangathan and SRUTI.

The aim of the workshop was to provide activists who have worked with the marginalised an opportunity to find their creativity. While they might not view themselves as artists, the workshop attempted to give them the opportunity to mould themselves in this role. The workshop also hoped to give them access to an outlet to express themselves -- creatively. It also aimed to do what art rarely does in the present day: have a political consciousness. The exhibition hopes to be able to tell the story of those who have been forced to be invisible for too long. It can be viewed at the School of Arts and Aesthetics of Jawaharlal Nehru University till 6 p.m. this Saturday.
