News Analysis
"Eminent persons honoured" (August 30, 2006), a report on personalities receiving the Rajiv Gandhi/G.K. Moopanar Award in Chennai, said they were "conferred with" the award. "Confer with" means to discuss something with others to reach a decision, while "confer" is to give something such as authority, a legal right or an honour on someone, as a reader pointed out. The correct usage was clarified on an earlier occasion in this column. The sentence should have been "The Rajiv Gandhi/G.K. Moopanar Award was conferred on eminent personalities ... ." * The sentence in "Srisailam temple elephant to bow out" (August 31, 2006) was: "[Forty-four-year-old] Saraswathi [the elephant at the Srisailam temple], was donated by a devotee from Trichur in Tamil Nadu last year. A reader said it was incorrect. Our Staff Reporter, Kurnool, clarifies that it was an error. Temple records also mention it as Trichur, Tamil Nadu. It should have been Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu. * In "Corrections and Clarifications" (August 23, 2006), we had said that the Yoganarasimha Swamy temple is atop the Sholingar hill. Prof. M.A. Venkatakrishnan, Professor, Department of Vaishnavism, University of Madras, clarifies that the deity in Sholingar is Yoganarasimhar, while the temple is called the Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple, as mentioned in the original report.
