SALEM: The Coimbatore Region General Insurance Employees' Association has urged the Union Government to create a strong general insurance company by merging all four public sector general insurance firms. At the annual general body meeting of the district unit held here recently, the association members asked the Centre and the State Government to protect public sector undertakings (PSUs). The Governments should withdraw measures that would ruin the PSUs. They passed a resolution to this effect, a release said. In another resolution, the members said the four public sector general insurance firms should stop compulsory transfer of employees. They should provide promotions pending for the last four years.
`Fill up vacancies'
The members asked the companies to fill up all vacancies and provide jobs to family members of the deceased employees on compassionate grounds. The employees left out in the 1995 pension scheme should be given an opportunity to join, they said. They appealed to the Centre to regulate fee structure in educational institutions. Condemning commercialisation of education, they said the Government should ensure quality education to all. The members elected T. Ganapathy as their president, M. Karuppaiah as secretary and R. Kandasamy as treasurer, the release said.
