SN College in semifinals

MADURAI: A brace by Kumar and one goal by Muthukumar helped Saraswathy Narayanan College, Madurai defeat Vivekananda College, Thiruvedagam 3-0 and enter the semifinals of the Rev. Fr. J. Prince memorial trophy State-level inter-collegiate football tournament at Arulanandar College ground, Karumathur on Friday.

Loyola College, Chennai, St. Joseph's College, and Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchi also booked last four spots.

The results:

Quarterfinals: Saraswathy Narayanan College 3 (Kumar 2, Muthukumar) bt Vivekananda College, Thiruvedagam 0; Loyola, Chennai 4 (James Selvalkumar 2, Ilamurugan, Santosh Ganesh) bt S. Vellaichamy Nadar College, Madurai 0; St. Joseph's, Tiruchi 4 (Sianu, Mohd. Habib, Suppuraj, Ruban Santhosh) bt American College 0; Jamal Mohamed College 3 (N. Sivakumar, N. Kalialandar, K. Ramanan) bt Arulanandar College 0.

LDC triumphs

Lady Doak College retained the Fatima College Cup defeating Sri Meenakshi Government College for Women 49-40 in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University inter-collegiate women's basketball tournament at the University Indoor Stadium on Friday.

The results:

Final: LDC 49 (Nithya 24, Srilekha Selvam 16) bt SMGCW 40 (Kriuthika 10, Saranya Devi 10). Semifinals: LDC bt VVV College, Virudhunagar 81-25; SMGCW bt EMG Yadava Women's College 42-32. Quarterfinals: EMG YWC bt SFR College, Sivakasi 92-47; VVV College bt Christian College, Kodaikanal 63-10.

Cricket tournament

The MDCA inter-collegiate cricket tournament for the India Cements Trophy will be organised by the American College at Madurai form Sept. 18 to 25. MSPSNM HSS wins

MSP Solai Nadar Matriculation HSS, with an all-win record in the semifinal round robin league, lifted the Kalimark K.P. Rajendran-Jayalakshmi Trophy in the State-level inter-school basketball tournament organised by the Rajendran Residential School here on Thursday.

American College HSS, with two wins, finished runner-up. NSVV HSS, Pattiveeranpatti finished third with a solitary win.

In the last match of the league, MSP Solai Nadar HSS defeated American College HSS 51-46. In another match NSVV HSS defeated MNU Jayaraj Nadar HSS 50-40.

Olympian N. Amarnath, Chief Manager, State Bank of India (Zonal office), Madurai gave away the prizes.

The results:

League: MSP Solai Nadar HSS 51 (Satheesh Kumar 20, Madhukannan 10) bt MNUJ HSS 40 (Ashok Kumar 12); NSVV HSS, Pattiveeranpatti 50 (Manimaran 12, Nishanth 10) bt MNUJ HSS 40 (Ashok Kumar 12).

Match drawn

At Tiruchi, AVC (Mayiladuthurai) and Raja Serfoji College (Thanjavur) played out a tie as both teams scored 53 points in a league encounter at the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate kabaddi tournament here on Friday.

The results: AVC (Mayiladuthurai) tied with Raja Serfoji College (Thanjavur) 53-53; Kongu Arts College (Karur) bt M.R. College (Thathanur) 39-26; M.R. College bt Raja Serfoji College 62-13.

Bharath posts win

At Coimbatore, Bharath SC defeated Texcity SC 79-52 in its opening fixture of the Texcity basketball tournament for men for the Sri K.P. Sathyamohan Memorial Trophy here on Friday.

Murali (20), Balaji (23) and Uday (14) played a vital role for Bharath, while Sriyash (13) and D. Sathish (12) did well for Texcity.

On Thursday, Swami Sivananda Sport School (SSSS) and Rajalakshmi Mills HS lifted the schoolboys and mini titles respectively.

SSSS struggled to beat Carmel Garden 54-53 while Rajalakshmi notched up an easy 27-8 win over Texcity.

Bharathiar triumphs

Bharathiar University Department emerged champion of the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate kabaddi tournament for men with two outright league wins at the Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science campus here on Friday.

In the three-team league fixture, Bharathiar University scored a 17-9 win over Government Arts College (Coimbatore). It followed it up a resounding 32-16 win over Government Arts College (Udumalpet) for the title.

Dr. Natarajan, Principal, Coimbatore Institute of Management and Technology (CIMAT), gave away the prizes.

The results: League: Bharathiar University Department bt Government Arts College (Coimbatore) 17-9; Bharathiar University Department bt Government Arts College (Udumalpet) 32-16.

Final standings: 1. Bharathiar University 4; 2. Government Arts College (Coimbatore) 2; Government Arts College (Udumalpet) 0.
