M.S. Appa Rao
CHENNAI: Veteran socialist, lawyer and photographer, M. S. Appa Rao, passed away on Friday evening here after a brief illness. He was 83. Born on April 11, 1923 into a zamindari family from Nuzvidu, Andhra Pradesh, MS as he was affectionately known joined the freedom struggle during the Quit India Movement. Later, he became an active member of the Socialist Party. A close associate of Ram Manohar Lohia and George Fernandes, Mr. Rao was also closely involved in building the nation post- Independence. Mr. Rao took an active part in the protests against the Emergency in 1975 and was imprisoned in Bangalore for nine months along with Madhu Limaye, Madhu Dandavate, Ramakrishna Hegde and Snehalata Reddy. As a member of the Janata Party, he brought together a group of people from diverse streams to keep political debate and dialogue alive. A multi-faceted personality, Mr. Rao was an art collector respected by artists. He also had a stint as a publisher, serving as Director of Orient Longman for over five years. An avid photographer, he served as Chairman of Hindustan Photo Films. Mr. Rao, who was dedicated to democratic values and principles, was founder-trustee of the Madras Institute of Development Studies. Described as a dear friend, a caring father and husband, Mr. Rao "made it possible for many to see the magic of life in all its facets." He is survived by his wife Vimala, his son Siddharth, daughters Nivedita, Suneela, Amukta and Aparajita. The cremation will take place on Saturday.
