BANGALORE: Crowded schedule only added to the delay and chaos on the opening day of the Youngsters SC-organised State senior and junior athletics championship at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Friday, even as three existing records were re-established. B.E. Indira clocked 4:51.7 seconds to set a new record in the girls under-18 1500 metres, besting Jyothi Kolekar's three-year old mark of 4:53.1 secs. Then it was the turn of P.J. Purandhara of South Western Railway and Belgaum's L. Tippanna (boys under-16) to set new marks in the javelin and discus respectively. Dakshina Kannada athletes expectedly dominated the first day's performances even as The Sri Lankan contingent made its presence felt with a clutch of medals on the opening day. Easy for Canara Bank
Canara Bank notched up a facile 3-0 victory over Central Excise in the Deccan Herald-Karnataka State Hockey Association super division league at the KSHA Stadium here on Friday. The winner led 2-0 at half-time. Two quick goals by Somanna ( 24th minute) and Dinesh (26th minute) put Canara Bank ahead. Canara Bank dominated the procedings and struck again through P.T. Aiyappa in the 52nd minute to complete a convincing win. In another tie, Maratha Light Infantry was locked in a 2-2 stalemate with another Army outfit, ASC. All the goals came in the second session with Krishna Patil converting a penalty stroke in the 40th minute and Ganesh Patil scoring off an indirect penalty hit in the 70th minute for MLI. Meanwhile, ASC struck through Rana Bengra (55th) and Harpreet Singh (63rd).
State women's chess
The United Karnataka Chess Association will conduct the State women's championship at the State Youth Centre here on September 9 and 10. The top four players of the meet will represent Karnataka in the National women's championship to be held in Chennai from September 19 to 26. For details, contact R. Roopa, Ila in final
Roopa Patwardhane of Mysore and Ila Bhide of Mangalore booked their places in the final of the State-level open badminton tournament for the Shepherd Cup. While Roopa quelled the challenge of local lass Soumya 21-14, 21-13 in the first semifinal, Ila beat Prateebha of Mysore 24-22, 21-12 in the other match. Rayeez PC and Alfaz of Mangalore and Neehad Kamath and Neeraj Kulkarni of Belgaum entered the pre-quarterfinals in the men's singles event. Subash sizzles
Subash Angadi's unbeaten 151 set up Jain International Residential School's (JIRS) 260-run victory over St. Joseph's Indian Middle School in a Himalaya Cup under-15 inter-school cricket tournament match here on Friday. JIRS posted 311 for five in 45 overs and bundled out St. Joseph's IMS for 51 in 26.1 overs. The scores: JIRS 311 for five in 45 overs (Subash Angadi 151 not out, Raj Kumar 87) bt St. Joseph's Indian Middle School 51 in 26.1 overs. St. John's HS 194 in 42.5 overs (Md. Aamir 65 not out, Pavan four for 27) bt SSM School 167 in 40 overs (Sripad 57 not out, G. Akash four for 24). Kensri School 179 for nine in 45 overs bt BGS International Residential School 147 in 42.1 overs (Rakshith four for 38). Florence Public School 210 in 41.4 overs (Harshith 66, Arjun 55) lost to Little Flower Public School 211 for six in 43.5 overs (Skanda 97, Sandeep 40).
Gopi stars for BHEL
Gopi's brace (48th and 73rd minutes) helped BHEL (EPD) defeat South Western Railway 2-1 in a State `B' division football league match at the Malleswaram Ground here on Friday. Prakash scored the lone goal for SWR. Earlier Gobind Shah's 56th minute strike helped Thilak Memorial defeat Rail Wheel Factory 1-0.
Good show by Tarabhai
T.R. Tarabhai won two bronze medals in the discus throw and shot put events respectively of the Masters' championship for veterans held recently at Kuala Lumpur. Tarabhai, is an enquiry-cum-reservation supervisor with the South Western Railway here in the City.
International marathon
The Bangalore International marathon will be held on September 17. CrossOver, under the aegis of the Karnataka Athletic Association (KAA), will conduct the event with over 35,000 participants expected to run.
