First woman CPMG of State
HYDERABAD:
Yesodhara Menon took charge as Chief Postmaster-General of Andhra Pradesh circle here on Friday. An Indian Postal Service officer of the 1978 batch, she is the first woman CPMG of the Andhra Pradesh circle since its formation 46 years ago. She held various positions earlier including Director of Postal Services and Postmaster-General in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Maharashtra circles. - Special Correspondent
Stamp on L.V. Prasad
HYDERABAD:
The Department of Posts is issuing a postage stamp in memory of the legendary filmmaker and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee L.V. Prasad. The stamp will be released by the Union Minister of State for Communications Shakeel Ahmed at a function here on September 5. L.V. Prasad, who passed away in 1994, was a successful actor, director, producer and an industrialist. - Special Correspondent
CITU plans jeep rallies

NTR-UHS counselling
VIJAYAWADA:
Dr. N.T.R. University of Health Sciences will conduct the second counselling for filling the D.M./M.Ch seats for the academic year 2006-07 on the university campus on September 8. Counselling will be held for M.Ch (genitourinary surgery), M.Ch (neurosurgery), M.Ch (plastic surgery), M.Ch (cardio thoracic surgery), M.Ch (paediatric surgery) and DM (neurology). 3 medicos suspended
KURNOOL:
Three third year MBBS students were suspended here on Friday on the charge of ragging three first year students in the `most inhuman' way. In charge Principal M.S.R.K. Prasad announced a two-year suspension for one student and six months each for two others. The Principal constituted a five-member committee to go into the incident in the medical college hostel and establish the guilt of two others. If proved they would also face two-year suspension.

Rats kill cobra
VISAKHAPATNAM:
Rodents are easy prey for snakes but a cobra that felt it could feast on a handful of rats kept in a tray faced stiff resistance and was killed by the rodents. This rare incident occurred in the Animal House of Andhra University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences on Friday. The research scholars fed the rats, on which an experiment was being carried out, around 11 a.m. and left . Meanwhile, the snake slithered into the Animal House and attacked the rats and killed two of them. But the remaining four rats attacked the cobra and killed it. - Special Correspondent
Revenue staff detained
KHAMMAM:
Four revenue officials including a deputy tahsildar, who sought to serve notices on farmers, as part of the land acquisition for the Polavaram project, were detained by villagers of Rudramkota village in Velerpadu madal for a day. They were confined to the gram panchayat office from 10 a.m. on Thursday. The villagers refused to free the officials without any firm assurance on the relief package. - Staff Reporter
Input subsidy
KADAPA:
An input subsidy of Rs. 1.05 crores was granted for horticultural crops damaged by heavy rains in 2,263.52 hectares of 16 mandals in September and December last year, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Friday. The input subsidy has been granted for Pendlimarry, Chennur, Vontimitta, Siddhavatam, Mydukur, Khajipet, Duvvur, Nandalur, Pulivendula, Rajampet, Railway Kodur, Penagalur, Obulavaripalle, Pullampet, Chitvel and Tsundupalle mandals, he said. In addition, compensation of Rs. 14.04 lakhs was granted for horticultural crop lost in 743.28 hectares in Lingala, Vempalle and Penagalur mandals in 2003. Staff Reporter

Pension disbursal
KADAPA:
The Government released Rs. 1.47 crores for disbursal of old age, widow, handicapped and handloom weaver pensions, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Friday. Pensions for two months would be disbursed to 58,154 aged beneficiaries, 2,868 handloom weavers, 6,674 widows and 5,856 physically-challenged persons, he said in a statement. Similarly, Rs. 76.18 lakhs was released for disbursing pensions to 38,092 beneficiaries under Indiramma scheme, he said. Staff Reporter

Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy inaugurated the Nutrition Week celebrations sponsored by Child and Women Welfare Department at the Department of Gynaecology in the General Hospital here on Friday. Arrested on rape charge
ADILABAD:
Jadhav Gnaneshwar, 20, of Gond Arkapur in Gudihatnoor mandal, was arrested in connection with a kidnap and rape case of a minor girl of the same village. According to Adilabad DSP Ratan Singh, the accused allegedly committed the crime on a SC girl on August 1 and had been absconding since then. Staff Reporter

Training programme
NIZAMABAD:
The Nehru Yuva Kendra on Friday launched a three-day training programme for self-help groups. About 30 youths selected from different youth clubs would be imparted training on thrift and savings at the camp. Inaugurating the programme, Deccan Grameena Bank, Mubaraknagar manager Manchikanti Ramulu said if the youth cultivated habit of saving money they would be able to achieve anything. Threat to stall reservoir Inauguration
VIZIANAGARAM
: The CPI(M) State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu on Friday demanded the inauguration of Peddagedda reservoir project be kept in abeyance till the Government settled the relief and rehabilitation package for the displaced families. Speaking after visiting the villages affected by the project, Mr. Raghavulu threatened to stall the inauguration if the displaced were not rehabilitated. He said Congress would have to pay the price for neglecting settlement of the displaced. He said tribals who had been irrigating lands were not issued pattas so far.

Pillion-rider succumbs to injuries

: Jonnada Sreenu (3) a pillion rider who slipped from the moped and suffered grievous injuries on Friday morning succumbed at the Government general hospital here shortly after. Police said the moped driver Satyanarayana - his father applied sudden brakes causing the accident near Samalkot. In another mishap, Gummella Victoria (35) who suffered burns from a fallen chimney in her hut in Ambedkar Nagar area of Karapa village succumbed at the Government general hospital on Friday. English scholar dead
VISAKHAPATNAM:
Chellapilla Sitaramamurti, a scholar of English and religious works, passed away in the city on Thursday. He was 97 and is survived by three sons and two daughters.
Sitaramamurti had served for many years at P.R. Government College at Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Cuddapah till 1963. - Special Correspondent
