Brinda Karat
SHIMLA: CPI (M) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat has asked Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to help solve the problems of workers of the Chamera III hydroelectric project in Chamba. At a meeting here with Mr. Singh, she also raised the issue of "illegal custodial torture" of CPI (M) State Secretariat member Kashmir Thakur by the Chamba police and demanded action against those guilty. Addressing a press conference here, Ms. Karat said the Chief Minister had ordered a probe into the torture of Dr. Thakur. He also assured her that he would intervene to find an amicable solution to the workers' dispute with the management of the Chamera project.
Concern over sex ratio
At a rally later, Ms. Karat expressed concern over the declining female sex ratio in the State. It was unfortunate that Himachal Pradesh was also emulating Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. "The State was going in for anti-woman practices in the name of development. The juvenile sex ratio had come down to an alarming 803 in the State." On the agrarian distress, Ms. Karat said apple growers and those involved in animal husbandry should be given a good support price. She said Bharatiya Janata Party leaders were shirking their responsibility of a reliable Opposition and were boycotting Parliament". The role of the real Opposition was being played by the Left parties, she added.
