Special Court to try power theft cases

Staff Reporter

BSES to get three dedicated courts

NEW DELHI: The acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice Vijender Jain, on Friday inaugurated the first Special Court to adjudicate power theft cases in the BSES areas at Patparganj in East Delhi.

The simple but impressive ceremony was also attended by Justice M.K. Sharma, Justice R.S. Sodhi and Justice S.K. Kaul besides Principal Secretary (Power) Rakesh Mehta and other senior government and BSES officials.

To curb the alarming electricity theft menace in its areas, BSES will get three dedicated Special Courts - two for BSES Rajdhani and one for BSES Yamuna. These courts are dedicated to try power theft cases and the second court is scheduled to be inaugurated on Saturday at Vikaspuri for BRPL, while the third court for BRPL will come up at Malviya Nagar.

So far BYPL and BRPL have filed over 1,200 and 700 cases in the Special Courts, respectively, and with the setting up of these courts they hope that prosecution would be speeded up and honest customers will not have to pay for thefts committed by others.

BRPL Chief Executive Officer Lalit Jalan described setting up of the Special Courts exclusively for trying power theft cases as an "important landmark" in the process of power privatisation in Delhi. He said, "Stealing electricity, a scarce resource, is not only a criminal offence but a major hurdle towards reaping the fruits of development."

His counterpart in BYPL, Arun Kanchan, said, "The five existing Special Courts were not exclusive for power theft cases and took up cases other than those related to power theft and heard the cases only on a few days in a week. But these new Special Courts would only deal with power theft cases on all working days and thereby ensure their quick resolution."
