The onam fiesta

The euphoria is already on. With the Malayalis all set to welcome their own Mahabali, who should in every probability be indeed pretty anxious to be with his countrymen amidst the festive time, the excitement has reached its zenith. Onam is one festival that everyone in this part of the world celebrates without any difference in caste, religion, colour or family status coming in the way.

How is the celebration like? Okay, the pookkalams, Onasadya and Onakkodi will all be there. Every Malayali home will be awaiting to match the mood in their own possible way.

For the kids, well, they will have virtually no one to nag them for not spending enough time before those boring text books. Who wants the books during a festive occasion... .eh?

These are the days when Keralites enjoy their vacations in the tourist spots and water theme parks across the state and outside. Pulikali and other traditional art forms may be rare these days, but families prefer to go to the theatres to watch the latest flicks and also, for various such entertainments. And of course, it is the time when people spend quite a sum to shop. New clothes will be brought by everyone around. And nowadays Malayalis seems to have decided to shop for the expensive products during the festive season, thanks to the discounts and offers from the various manufacturers.

Well, it is in fact heartening to note that every Malayali still enjoys celebrating the harvest festival, Onam, with the same passion that everyone did much before. The God's Own Country is a land of celebrations, as all will agree. But none of the festivals could be closer to everyone's heart alike, as Onam is.
