NEW DELHI: Despite making an announcement about resumption of its sealing drive against unauthorised structures across the Capital almost a fortnight ago, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi squads on Friday seemed directionless and failed to target illegal commercial properties in most of the areas. Due to lack of homework, the civic body's teams conducted surveys in some localities trying to figure out shops for sealing. Though the civic body officials had announced on Thursday that on Day One of the drive they would only target hazardous and polluting businesses and spare colonies falling in `A' and `B' categories, in several areas the pace of the sealing drive remained very slow and not even banned businesses were targeted. "One of the main reasons for the slow pace of the drive was the meeting during the day between the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee and senior MCD officials to discuss various technicalities. We were also awaiting a concrete roadmap to carry out the drive as no proper survey of illegal shops across the city has been done. The drive is expected to gain momentum next week," said a senior MCD official. The MCD squads did carry out the sealing drive in some areas but only in the afternoon as the morning hours were spent in gauging the mood of the people who had come out on the streets to protest. In some areas people also complained of the MCD squads adopting a pick-and-chose policy and targeting wrong businesses. For instance, at Rajinder Nagar in Karol Bagh Zone, the MCD squad sealed a shop that was selling electronic goods but having the display board of building material.
