Maoists to launch another movement

Kathmandu: Accusing Nepal's Government of deliberately delaying peace talks, the Maoists on Saturday said they would launch another people's movement to expedite the process of restoration of democracy in the Himalayan country.

The next movement by the Maoists, however, will be peaceful, party's chief negotiator and spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara told reporters here. Accusing the Government of supporting the monarchy, he said unless the system was abolished and the military was restructured, ``we cannot be sure of institutionalising democracy.''

He ruled out the possibility of managing Maoist arms before reaching a political understanding with the Seven Party Alliance government.

He also accused the SPA of breaching the eight-point accord reached between the two sides in mid-June during the first Summit level talks held between Prime Minister G.P. Koirala and Maoist chief Prachanda.

Interim constitution

Adopting an interim constitution, forming an interim government inclusive of the Maoists and holding the constituent assembly polls is the major agenda which needs to be addressed soon, he pointed out.

A statement by the Maoists on conclusion of its central meeting said the party had given strict orders to its cadre to halt acts of extortion, abduction and intimidation of people and those violating the order would be severely punished.

The party has also instructed the local leadership to return captured house and land and to create conducive atmosphere for the people displaced by the conflict to return home, Mr. Mahara said. — PTI
