SPELDID DISPLAY: Tantri (chief priest) of the Sree Vallabha Temple Akeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiri inaugurating the Poorachmayam as part of the three-day Onam celebrations organised by the Central Travancore Development Society in Thiruvalla on Saturd ay.
PATHANAMTHITTA: The Poorachamayam, a colourful exhibition of the Pooram accompaniments, was held as part of the three-day Onam celebrations organised by the Central Travancore Development Society (CTDS) in Thiruvalla on Saturday. Tantri (chief priest) at Sree Vallabha Temple Akeeramon Kalidasa Bhattathiri inaugurated the Poorachamayam by lighting a ceremonial lamp. CTDS president Fr. Abraham Mulamoottil presided over the inaugural function. Society secretary Praksah Babu and general convenor M. Salim spoke. Nettippattom (caprisons), aalavattom (ornamental fan made of peacock feathers), venchamarom (a royal fan) and a variety of parasols are on display at the show. The Poorachamayam drew a big crowd. People from Kottayam and Alappuzha turned up to see the exhibition. As many as 1,001 oil lamps were lit at the SCS Junction on Saturday. Actor Samvratha Sunil lit the first lamp. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostum delivered the Onam message on the occasion. The `Onasadya' will be held at St. John's Cathedral Hall on Sunday noon. A cultural procession will be taken out prior to the Pooram. Meyyattom, a modern dance form presented by 60 artistes, will be a major attraction, the organisers said. Minister for Transport Mathew T. Thomas will inaugurate the Pooram at the Public Stadium at 4 p.m. P.J. Kurien, Member of Rajya Sabha, will hoist the ceremonial flag. Actor Manoj K. Jayan and director Blessy are to be the guests of honour. Twenty-two caparisoned elephants will be paraded and 210 parasols will be used for the Kudamattom (exchange of parasols).
