MCD leaders `taken to task'

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee on Saturday reportedly took to task senior leaders of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi who had gone to seek relaxation for certain trades and businesses during the ongoing sealing drive against illegal commercial establishments in the Capital.

Irked over repeated attempts by the MCD leaders to create "confusion" among traders, residents and media over the sealing drive, the Monitoring Committee members asked them not to issue statements that raise false hopes among traders and the people. The MCD delegation that met them included the Leader of the House, Jitender Kochar, Standing Committee Chairman J. K. Sharma and its member Brij Mohan Sharma.

"The Monitoring Committee members are angry over the way the deliberations between them and senior MCD functionaries were being leaked to the media. On Friday evening also these leaders distributed a list of businesses to the media claiming that the Monitoring Committee had agreed to give them a reprieve, which was entirely wrong. These leaders have been told not to create confusion and misguide the people as it could worsen the situation," said sources in the MCD, adding that any relief to traders can be granted only by the Supreme Court.

These leaders have met the Monitoring Committee members earlier too and have been claiming that the Committee as well as the Centre has been finding out ways to provide some relief to the affected traders.

Meanwhile, refusing to divulge the details of the meeting before the media, the leaders claimed their talks with the Monitoring Committee members were fruitful and some relief might be coming the way of the affected traders and residents. "We have given our suggestions and demands to the Committee members who have assured that they would consider them sympathetically," said Mr. Kochar.

Accusing MCD officials of "over-enthusiasm" in their sealing drive and going beyond the directions of the Supreme Court, Mr. Kochar said they had complained about it to the Monitoring Committee members and action would be taken against officials found guilty.

Stating that the MCD would carry out sealing operations only as per the directions of the Monitoring Committee, he said the Deputy Commissioners and Additional Commissioners of the civic body had been summoned by the Committee members for a meeting on Monday to sort out certain issues relating to the sealing drive.
