Plea to increase support price for copra

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has appealed to the Agricultural Prices Commission (APC) to increase support price of copra for the 2007 season in order to save coconut cultivation, which is in the grip of a severe crisis in Kerala. Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran informed the APC on Friday that based on the studies conducted by the Agricultural Prices Board of Kerala, the price of `milling copra' should be raised to Rs.4870 per quintal and that of `unda copra' to Rs.5120 per quintal. He urged the APC to give special consideration for revising the support price of copra.. - Special Correspondent

Land acquisition: meet convened

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran has convened a meeting at Guruvayur Municipal Town Hall at 11 a.m. on September 9 to discuss the acquisition of land for the proposed Tanur-Guruvayur coastal rail line and review the progress of the Guruvayur-Edapally line. It will be attended by representatives of recognised political parties, MPs, MLAs and officials. The Minister has sought cooperation of all sections for the acquisition of land for the Tanur-Guruvayur line. - Special Correspondent

Cultural centre inaugurated

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Cultural Centre in Aranmula, constructed at a cost of Rs.7 lakh in front of the Sree Parthasarthy Temple complex in Aranmula, was inaugurated by P.J.Kurien, MP, on Saturday. The centre has been constructed with the fund alotted from the Local Area Development Fund of Prof. Kurien as part of the PSS initiative to preserve the cultural heritage of Aranmula Vallamkali. — Staff Reporter

ABVP plea

KOZHIKODE: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) State secretary V.P. Rajivan said in a press release here on Friday that students in the State should be provided an opportunity to sing Vande Mataram on September 11 when schools reopened after Onam holidays. The organisation had petitioned Minister for Education M.A. Baby in this regard. The song will be rendered in schools elsewhere in the country on September 7 to mark its 100th anniversary.

Feast for monkeys

WAYANAD: The management and staff of Gandhi Gramam, Wayanad, will arrange an Onam feast for monkeys this year too. The feast will be arranged at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Viewpoint at the Wayand Ghat, said Gandhi Gramam managing director Devan Gandhi Gramam in a release.

PATHANAMTHITTA: Poet P.K. Gopi has been selected for this year's Mahakavi Vennikkulam Memorial Literary Award, instituted by the Thadiyoor-based Dakshina Samskarika Vedi. Gopi's anthology of Malayalam poems, `Chiranthanom', won him the award, The awardwould be presented to Gopi by Assembly Deputy Speaker Jose Baby at a function at the Mahatma Library Hall at Thadiyoor on September 10. — Staff Reporter
